The opera house-style yabby trap is banned in public waters (rivers, creeks and lakes). This is because air-breathing wildlife such as platypus, turtles and some water birds can enter traps looking for food, get caught and drown.
Platypus are a protected animal throughout Australia, and in New South Wales under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974.
Anyone caught using illegal yabby traps may face heavy fines.
